JOHANNESBURG – On Wednesday, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni announced a series of changes for South African consumers and businesses during his 2021 budget speech.
One of the most unpopular increases among South Africans is the excise duty on alcohol and cigarettes.
Once again this year, he will pay more for his sins. Despite calls from the alcohol and tobacco industry to reduce excise taxes on alcohol and tobacco, the government plans to increase them by 8% by 2021/22.

“It is clear that excessive alcohol consumption can lead to negative health and social outcomes. Consumers react to price increases, and higher prices should lead to less consumption of alcoholic products with positive side effects,” said Mboweni during his speech, which began at 2 pm.
Here’s a breakdown of what that means for your purchasing power:
- a 340ml can of beer or cider will cost 14c extra
- a 750 ml bottle of wine will cost an extra 26 cents
- a 750ml bottle of sparkling wine an extra 86c
- a 750 ml bottle of spirits, including whiskey, gin or vodka, will increase by R5.50
- a pack of 20 cigarettes will cost an additional R1.39c
- 25 grams of chopped tobacco will cost an extra 47c
- a 23 gram cigar will cost R7.71 more expensive.
