Eastern Cape police seized counterfeit goods, estimated to be worth R1 469 700, during a joint operation at a shopping center in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.
“Trade in counterfeit products is one of the greatest threats to the economic order and growth of this country. Therefore, as a law enforcement, every effort should be made to clamp down on illicit transactions in counterfeit products. “said spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu in a statement Sunday.
Ngqura Port Commander Colonel Christopher Zondi received information about the sale of counterfeit goods at a store in a popular shopping center in the Kabega Park police area.
Subsequently, Operation Seiskhona was activated and the police, accompanied by a representative from the patent attorney’s office, searched the store. Counterfeit products, mainly perfumes and board games, were subsequently confiscated.

A warning was issued to the store manager for violation of patent laws.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga welcomed the seizure and praised the swift action by the police.
“The illicit trade in counterfeit products threatens finances that affect the country’s economy.
“The purpose of reporting this information is to help law enforcement agencies mitigate and address the threat. I encourage more operations of this nature,” Ntshinga said.
