Durban – Police Minister Bheki Cele has been silent regarding what happened during his meeting with former President Jacob Zuma, saying he will first brief the ruling ANC before discussing the matter with the media and the public.
Cele unexpectedly traveled to Nkandla today to meet with the former head of state.
The meeting comes amid a growing confrontation between Zuma and the Zondo commission, which is investigating allegations of state capture between 2009 and 2018, the period Zuma was president of the country.
Cele was initially blocked by a uniformed battalion of MK veterans (Umkhonto weSizwe) who have been guarding Zuma’s Nkandla home since Sunday. Veterans fanned out in anticipation of Zuma being arrested for defying a subpoena to appear before the commission.
Cele spokesperson Lirandzu Themba said Cele went to see Zuma in his capacity as minister of state and member of the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC).
“(The) minister has concluded his visit with the former president and will first update the ANC leadership on his visit, before involving the media. There is no date on when he will meet with the ANC… He was there in both capacities, as a police minister and as a member of the ANC’s NEC, ”Themba said.
Over the weekend, the ANC NEC resolved that the ANC send a delegation to meet with Zuma and speak with him about his challenge to the commission.
