JOHANNESBURG – As the Health Department prepares to launch the first phase of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine on Wednesday, a lot of work was done behind the scenes to prepare.
Virtual training on vaccination began in all provinces earlier this year.
After a brief setback, the country’s first COVID-19 vaccines are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday and have been distributed to 18 sites across the country. The first shipment of 80,000 vaccines will be launched as part of the expanded research South Africa has been involved in with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, meaning taxpayers won’t pay the bill. These vaccines will be used to vaccinate healthcare workers across the country. The next nine million vials of the vaccine will be purchased by fiscus.
