Johannesburg – The Mpumalanga Police Commissioner has appealed to officers to seek help for their domestic problems and not to suffer in silence following an incident in which a police officer killed her boyfriend and her baby committed suicide.
Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma said the allegations against the 28-year-old police officer were “devastating” and that if faced with domestic challenges, officers should not tackle the depressing issues on their own.
The incident occurred on Saturday in Embalenhle near Secunda.
The motive for the shooting has not been stated, but reports abound that the couple had been in trouble.
Police were also unable to pinpoint what happened before the shooting, but Mpumalanga Police Brig. Leonard Hlathi said the couple were not together at the time of the incident.
Hlathi said that they, along with paramedics, were informed of the shooting and rushed to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the woman was certified dead at the scene, while her daughter and the father of her son were taken to a nearby clinic where, unfortunately, the man died upon arrival.
“However, the girl was transferred to the hospital after being stabilized, but then she died. Since then, the police have registered a case with two counts of murder and an investigation, ”Hlathi said.
The officer is believed to have used her service pistol to kill her lover and her baby.
Zuma said these tragic incidents could be avoided if affected parties sought professional help.
“In the police, we have a section of Employee Health and Welfare, which specializes in the welfare of members and offers their services without expecting payment, because these professionals are paid by the state.
“Therefore, I urge all members to make effective use of the EHW where they can be relieved of any peer pressure they may encounter,” he said.
