Durban – Nearly four hours after arriving at former President Jacob Zuma’s home in Nkandla, the leadership of the uMkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) was still locked in a meeting with him.
Earlier this week, the MKMVA National Executive Committee (NEC) resolved to travel to Nkandla in northern KZN to offer Zuma some spiritual support as he faces off against the Zondo commission. The commission wants Zuma to appear before it as ordered by the Constitutional Court last month.
However, Zuma says the court and commission have teamed up against him to force his appearance. In his defiance, the former president said he was prepared to be jailed for his stance.
Before the MKMVA visit, the entrance to Zuma’s home was abuzz with activity with former MK soldiers parading and singing songs in support of the former statesman. In one song, the group of about 50 MKMVA members with military insignia sang a song that read “Zuma is our commander.”

Around 1 p.m., a convoy of black luxury sedans pulled up in front of the house and MKMVA President Kebby Maphatsoe and association spokesman Carl Niehaus emerged. The MKMVA members who were parading gave them an honor guard and entered the meeting with Zuma.
Before entering the meeting, Niehaus told the media camped outside Zuma’s house that the meeting would last about three hours. He also assured the media contingent that they will brief the media after meeting with Zuma.
