Johannesburg – A Vosloorus mother, Ekurhuleni is at odds with the Nedbank banking group over unpaid insurance claims after her property was burned to the ground.

Mmaphuti Jacobeth Legodi, 55, who had lived in her home in Vosloorus Extension 13 since 2007, faced an unbearable situation last year in March when her home burned down.

According to the mother of five, her main switch exploded and started the fire. She and her five children, ages 18, 16, 15, 13 and 11, were inside the home when the incident occurred. They escaped unharmed but were left with lingering trauma after watching their house go up in smoke.

Legodi, who lost everything in the fire, told The Star that she and her children have been living in her back room for the past eight months with no way to rebuild their home as the amount received was so small.

“I had a night shift, when I left the house it was around 6 in the afternoon and we were scrapped. According to my oldest son, the power came back around 8.30pm for a couple of minutes before it went out again. Apparently he came back at 10.30 pm around 11 pm, when my children were sleeping, ”he said.

Legodi said that according to his eldest son, there was an explosion and he gathered the other children outside where they asked for help from neighbors, who called a fire department.

“When I got the call from the neighbors alerting me to the news, I was so scared, but it consoled me that no one got hurt and that help was on the way.”

The insurance was helpful at first, offering the Legodi family accommodation for three months while they inspected the house.

“Things looked promising until they had to pay the payment. That’s when they started spinning me, ”Legodi said.

He said he took out their bond while still married. She was asked to come with her husband, against whom she had a restraining order at the time.

When she tried to explain that they had been divorced and he had lost the house, Nedbank kept insisting that she needed to go with him to sign.

“It broke my heart after the trauma of my house burning down and I no longer had a house, now I had to contact a man who had also put me through hell to get help and still not get paid from Nedbank” .

According to Legodi, even after she got her ex-husband to sign the insurance payment, what she received was less than what Nedbank had promised.

“Nedbank said that I will receive a sum of R350,000 and I only received R85,000 last weekend. When I inquired about the other money, they told me that the money had been credited to my bond account. I told them that I would like that money to rebuild my house because I cannot pay a bond for a house that I do not have.

Nedbank media spokesperson Mbali Khumalo said a sum of R351,000 was paid, which went to Legodi’s bond account, and she received only a small part of the money.

“The client was paid R351 122.94 and this was paid into the client’s bond account number as their bond was in default, and according to an email we used it to pay the bond and the balance would then be transferred from the loans mortgage to her (according to the agreement reached and email received from the client). The client was 70% underinsured and we settled the claim based on the above average. “

Legodi said: “I have lost everything and I am not happy.

“I need Nedbank to give me the money to rebuild a home for my children who have had to endure so much.”
