JOHANNESBURG – Eskom has announced that it will implement stage 2 load shedding from 10pm Tuesday night to 5am Wednesday.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the power company said this was necessary to preserve and replenish emergency generation reserves and maximize available capacity during the day.

“The power generation system is still severely restricted due to the failures of the high-generation units during the last two days, as well as the delay to return to service of some units outside of planned maintenance,” the statement added.

Eskom spokesperson Sikhonathi Mantshantsha said: “We currently have 4,000 megawatts of planned maintenance, while another 14,375 of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns and delays. Eskom expects some of these generating units to be operational again from tomorrow [Wednesday] and will continually assess the situation. ”
