Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan smashed a century of maiden like Pakistan set an overwhelming goal of 370 runs to South Africa on the fourth day of the second test at Rawalpindi on Sunday.
At tea, South Africa was 37-1 with starter Aiden Markram hitting 14 and Rassie van der Dussen hitting four, as the Tourists still need 333 runs in the remaining four sessions.
Dean Elgar was the man eliminated, trapped behind fast pitcher Shaheen Shah Afridi for 17.
Rizwan’s masterclass helped Pakistan add 169 runs for the loss of four wickets on the day before being eliminated for 298.
Rizwan was in their prime, creating a 97-run partnership for the ninth wicket with number-ten hitter Nauman Ali who made 45, frustrating South Africans seeking a leveling series victory.
Pakistan leads the two-game series 1-0 after winning the first test by seven wickets in Karachi.
Rizwan, knocked down by van der Dussen by four against Keshav Maharaj on Friday, punished South Africa and nullified their hopes of a victory with 115 not eliminated, spread over 292 minutes and intertwined with 15 limits.
He singled into his 100th, surpassing his previous best of 95 scored against Australia in Brisbane in November 2019.
The 97-run tier is also a new record for the ninth wicket against South Africa, improving on the 80 runs scored between Azhar Mahmood and Shoaib Akhtar in Durban in 1998.
Spinner George Linde, who took 5-64, posted his first five-wicket round when he fired last man Shaheen for four. Maharaj finished with 3-118 while Kagiso Rabada had numbers of 2-34.
Pakistan, resuming at 129-6, added 88 runs for the loss of Hasan Ali (five) and Yasir Shah (23) in the first session.
Hasan was the first to go when a leg got caught earlier in the sixth final of the day, but Yasir helped Rizwan put 53 for the eighth wicket in a stubborn position.
Linde, who dropped Yasir from his own bowling alley when the batter was at 15, was eventually caught by goalie Quinton de Kock to break the stands.
