‘What a joke!’ – Cricket experts criticize Australia’s decision to abandon SA tour

Cricket Australia’s decision to postpone their test tour to South Africa was not well received by Proteas fans.

The Baggy Greens were scheduled to play a three-test series in South Africa later this month, but acting CA CEO Nick Hockley said Tuesday that traveling to the country posed an “unacceptable” risk to the tour.

Cricket South Africa’s director of cricket, Graeme Smith, said his organization was “extremely disappointed by CA’s decision.”

“CSA has been working tirelessly over the past weeks to ensure that we meet all of CA’s expectations.

“This was to be the longest tour in a biosecure environment that included a three-match test series that was scheduled to begin with Australia’s arrival at the end of the month. Therefore, be informed of CA’s decision at the last minute is frustrating, “Smith said.

Social media was in an uproar after the tour’s sudden cancellation, with many hinting that the so-called big three of the sport – India, England and Australia, were doing whatever they pleased.

“Do you think Australians would have postponed a tour to India? Or how about a lovely Ashes tour of the UK? No chance! Sorry to the players, what a joke!” Former Proteas spinner Paul Harris tweeted.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan added: “Australians pulling out of the South African tour is a huge concern for the game … Would they have pulled out of an India tour, is the question ?! It’s so important these days that the big three do everything What they can can help those who have no financial influence … #JustSaying. “

Other commenters also expressed their views on Twitter:

CA, however, denied on Wednesday that it was only interested in lucrative series against India and England.

Hockley described the pullout as “heartbreaking”, insisting that the Covid-19 situation in South Africa gave Australians no other choice.

“We share his disappointment, we have all worked to make this tour happen,” he told reporters.

“At the end of the day, the weight of medical advice and our duty to care for players and staff meant that we really were left with no other choice.”
