A supposed figure from the underworld has been killed.

  • William Stevens was shot and killed outside his home Monday night.
  • He was released on bail of 100,000 rand on charges related to the murder of suspected international steroid smuggler Brian Weinstein.
  • He and his two co-defendants were scheduled to return to court next week.

The alleged leader of the Cape Town gang, William “Red” Stevens, was shot and killed outside his home in an apparent hit on Monday night.

Although the police did not name him, several well-located sources confirmed his identity to News24.

Netwerk24 also reported that Stevens, the alleged leader of the gang of 27, was shot dead by gunmen who arrived at his home in a silver vehicle.

Police said a 56-year-old man was shot at his home on Rembrandt Street, Kraaifontein.

“Three unknown suspects fled the scene and have not yet been arrested. The identity of the victim cannot be revealed at this premature stage,” said Western Cape police spokesman Colonel Andrè Traut.

Stevens was released on rand 100,000 bail for his alleged role in the 2017 murder of suspected international steroid dealer Brian Weinstein, who was murdered at his home in Constantia.

His co-defendants, Mark Lifman and Jerome Booysen, also received a bond of 100,000 rand each at the Cape Town Magistrates Court.

According to the state, Lifman allegedly paid Booysen, who in turn paid Stevens for the hit.

News24 previously reported that Booysen survived an attempt on his life after a shooting at Durbanville Memorial Park in Cape Town.

His case is expected to return to court on February 9.
