Durban – Two men who were caught transporting liquor in defiance of closure regulations were fined R1,000 and are expected to appear in court next month.
The government banned the sale, distribution and transportation of alcohol for the third time on December 28 so that hospitals can focus on Covid-19 patients instead of dealing with alcohol-related trauma cases.
According to KZN police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala, the Zululand district task force had been conducting an operation over the weekend on the R66 near the Mkhuze River.
“During the operation, the team stopped a vehicle with two occupants traveling on the R66. The vehicle was stopped and a search was made.
“When searching the vehicle, it was discovered that the occupants were carrying liquor. The vehicle was traveling from Pongola and the liquor was destined to be delivered in Mashona and Mahlabathini ”.
He said the 33- and 35-year-old suspects were arrested and charged in accordance with the Disaster Management Act. His next court appearance is March 1 at the Magistrates Court in Magudu.
In a separate incident in the Northwest province last week, a dairy store owner and a customer were fined for buying and selling alcohol. According to the police, liquor worth more than 16,000 rand was found hidden in potato bags and confiscated. The store manager, 54, was fined 5,000 rand and the customer, 50, paid a fine of 1,000 rand.
