The assault charges against Orlando Pirates midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch have been provisionally dropped.
Lorch was arrested in September and subsequently released on R2,000 bail after his girlfriend opened an assault case against him in Midrand, Johannesburg.
He was charged with assault with the intent to cause serious bodily harm.
The charges were dropped in Randburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
“Lorch, through its legal team, submitted claims to the Senior Prosecutor (SPP) and after considering such claims, the SPP made the decision to provisionally withdraw the charge against Lorch,” said Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecutor’s Office NPA).
Mjonondwane said SAPS had been instructed to conduct a further investigation, which will inform the NPA’s decision on whether or not to proceed with the Lorch prosecution.
