JOHANNESBURG – The “missing” Fourways hippo is alive and well in its natural habitat, contrary to claims on social media that it was captured and euthanized for its meat.
The fugitive mammal was first seen wandering in Chartwell near the Jukskei River last month and later in the Fourways area.
Last week, the Gauteng Department of Agriculture said it was working closely with the North West provincial government to increase efforts to find the elusive hippopotamus.

“The hippopotamus that was sighted at Chartwell in late December is not lacking. It has returned to its original habitat (Hartbeespoort dam) and this was discovered with the help of technology used by the Endangering Wildlife Trust (EWT). The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and EWT are monitoring the hippo’s movements, “said Nozipho Hlabangana of the department.
