A crowd of 30 was dispersed from a gathering in Durban early Monday morning for allegedly conspiring to stage an illegal march to City Hall amid threats of protest from truckers.
On Sunday, the KwaZulu-Natal Interim MEC for Kwazi Mshengu Transportation and law enforcement officials visited several truck depots and access points, and the province’s law enforcement agencies went on high alert in anticipation of the protest action.
“We are visiting all truck stops around Durban to make sure all systems are in place following intelligence reports indicating that there may be potential outages in [sic] our highways and the main transportation routes in the province as a result of truck drivers’ complaints.
We are satisfied with the level of preparation and the security plan that has been developed. We can confirm that all of our law enforcement agencies are on high alert and that no one will be spared if they break the law. We want to send a strong message to all truck drivers who want to disrupt our domestic routes that all law enforcement agencies will act decisively, “Mshengu said.

Over the years, the province has been a focus of truck attacks and protest actions related to the hiring of foreigners in the freight industry.
In a follow-up statement on Monday, Mshengu praised law enforcement agencies for reducing potential protest action.
“The police have stepped up law enforcement operations to deal with various elements of crime, while joint deployments of law enforcement agencies remain in place and the police remain on high alert to prevent any lawlessness or disruption in our province. .
“At this point, we are satisfied with the successful implementation of the detailed and integrated security plan that has been developed. Once again, we wish to warn those who are hell-bent on causing anarchy that the country is still in Level 3 Shutdown. National and no assemblies are allowed. Those who continue to do so will meet our law enforcement agencies on the streets and they are ready to enforce the law to its maximum limit, “Mshengu said.
Meanwhile, one person was arrested after foreign stores were attacked in Durban’s financial district, also on Monday.
“A suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody. Police are investigating whether there is a correlation between the mob planning to cause anarchy in Durban’s central district with recent threats from truckers who were also threatening to embark on an illegal protest. ”Said the Department of Transportation.
