JOHANNESBURG – Tropical Storm Eloise has wreaked havoc in parts of Limpopo, with several roads and bridges flooded, while trees have been uprooted.

The cyclone has been downgraded to an overland depression as Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo brace for stronger winds and flash floods.

This is because it already caused flooding in the coastal city of Beira in Mozambique, when the cyclone struck that country on Saturday.

Residents in their homes in troubled areas have been urged to stay home and not cross flooded bridges.

Meteorologist Wayne Venter said more heavy rains could be expected in Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

“We still have that warning about the possibility of heavy rains, widespread flooding in the eastern parts of Mpumalanga, the eastern parts of Limpopo, the southwestern parts of Limpopo and the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, especially in the morning hours.”

The spokesman for the African National Congress (ANC) in the Peter Mokaba region of Limpopo, Jimmy Machaka.

“Roads and bridges have been damaged and trees have fallen on the roads causing congestion and traffic on our roads. We are pleading with community members to keep calm and stay home.”
