St Anne’s said in a statement that due to “growing concern among parents and girls about returning to school amidst the virulent strain of Covid,” students should undergo a PCR test between 48 and 72 hours before returning to the school.

Parents are asked to email the test result or their daughter can provide a hard copy of her “negative test result” to her housekeeper upon arrival.

“Our staff in close and frequent contact with the girls will also be encouraged to take a test,” according to the statement from St Anne’s.

Fiona Rogers, Executive Director of Roedean School in Johannesburg, said: “We will not ask members of our community to provide negative Covid testing prior to their return to school.”

In an emailed response to TimesLIVE, Peter Storrar, Hilton College’s marketing director, said they had asked for the test because they wanted to limit the risk of transmission, as all the students were interns.

“Our testing process will not provide 100% security, but it will certainly help contain the spread of Covid-19.”
