Durban – Former KZN ANC eThekwini and MPL Mayor Zandile Gumede is mourning the murder of one of his longtime loyalists, confidants and top activists.
Sduduzo Magwaza was shot and killed Tuesday night while in the village of Cornubia in Durban.
Independent Media was informed that unknown persons shot him while he was inside the village and he was rushed to an undisclosed hospital where he later died.
Magwaza was not only Gumede’s confidant who supported her when she appeared in court, but their relationship dates back to when Gumede was fighting for the position of regional president of eThekwini ANC against James Nxumalo, another former mayor of eThekwini.
During the chaotic 2016 local government elections, Magwaza ran for the ruling party’s 30th district (Mayville, Durban), but the district attorney was seized from him and he lost his chance to be a councilor.
Magwaza also spoke out on social media, poking fun at Gumede’s detractors, telling them that the corruption charges against the former mayor are politically motivated and that Gumede would be re-elected as the regional president of eThekwini ANC when an elective conference is finally called.
Most of the details about their murders are still unclear and it could not be determined whether the murder was politically motivated or purely criminal.
The spokesman for Gumede’s supporters, Mzomuhle Dube, confirmed the killing and said they were working to visit Magwaza’s family for some details.
“At the moment we do not have much information about the incident and we are trying to avoid making statements without having the complete information. We are planning to visit his family in Cornubia today and the scheduled time for the visit is 11am, “Dube told Independent Media on Wednesday morning.
Nhlakanipho Ntombela, ANC spokesperson at KZN, referred all questions to the eThekwini regional task force. Bheki Ntuli, a senior member of the task force, who confirmed the sad news.
“Yes, (the murder) happened yesterday,” Ntuli confirmed.
