Johannesburg police are on the hunt for two men involved in a robbery that resulted in the death of a store clerk in the Westgate Mall on Monday.

“It was reported that two masked men entered the store pretending to be customers,” said police spokeswoman Captain Mavela Masondo in a statement.

Masondo said a preliminary investigation revealed that the assailants had forced the employees into the warehouse.

However, when one of the employees managed to break free, the intruders shot him dead.

“The two suspects allegedly took the mobile phones from the safe after forcing employees into a warehouse at gunpoint.”

“There was commotion and security prevented me from entering. Five minutes later, the police arrived and people began to evacuate,” Natukunda said.

He said moments later, a helicopter began circling the mall.

Natukunda said he returned to the mall on Tuesday and found it “extremely empty.”

“Some stores are operating with only one door open; it’s tense and you can tell that people are anxious,” he said.

The police are calling on the public to submit any information that may assist in their investigation.
