A family of five is in serious condition after a huge swarm of bees attacked them in their car while they were traveling through a natural estate in Mpumalanga on Sunday afternoon.
According to ER24 paramedics, they passed over a honeycomb on the farm, south of Mbombela.
“The bees crowded together and entered the vehicle through the open windows, causing the family to panic and run,” ER24 spokesman Ross Campbell said in a statement.
Campbell said the couple, their two young daughters and their baby were stung hundreds of times.
“The eldest daughter, believed to be around 12 years old, ran to a nearby farm for help as she was continually bitten.”
There, they sprayed her and told her to jump into the pool before anyone called for help.
Taken to the hospital
Someone on the farm tried to get down to help the rest of the family, but had to back off due to the swarm of bees.
“The father was heard yelling for help from a vlei where he had jumped into the water with his toddler and baby in an attempt to escape the bees,” Campbell said.
A paramedic arrived at the scene around 6:15 p.m.
“Our doctor managed to get close enough to grab the baby and toddler and run back to the farm, delivering them directly to the ambulance team who rushed them to the hospital.”
By then, the eldest daughter had been transferred to the hospital.
When more paramedics arrived at the scene, they rescued the father and managed to find the mother, who had run back to the car.
“Both were treated for the hundreds of bee stings they had suffered and were transferred to Mediclinic Nelspruit to join their daughters for further emergency care.”
