India have filed a complaint after the third test against Australia in Sydney it was marred by accusations of racist abuse of the team by sections of the crowd.

The incident occurred late on the third day of Saturday with fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah apparently the target as they moved across the boundary ropes.

Reports in Australia said the International Cricket Council was investigating following a complaint to match referee David Boon, although this has yet to be confirmed.

The Times of India newspaper said fans were drunk.

“Bumrah and Siraj were called monkeys, idiots and bastards by people for almost the entire time they were in the field,” he said.

The Indian and Australian cricket boards have yet to comment, but Australian great Shane Warne called the crowd shameful.

“Shameful to be honest, absolutely shameful,” he said while commenting on Sunday’s game. “Let’s hope they go down heavy and find the culprits.”

Only 10,000 fans, a quarter of the capacity, are allowed to enter the Sydney Cricket Ground every day due to coronavirus concerns, making their chants and screams more clearly heard.
