The incident occurred at the Shifa Private Hospital in Durban on January 2.

The Lenmed Group has launched an investigation into the death of six patients in one of its hospitals.

The deaths were reportedly caused by an interruption in the oxygen supply.

The incident occurred at the Shifa Private Hospital in Durban on January 2. At that time, 77 patients were admitted to the hospital.

The group’s marketing manager, Michelle Naidoo, said hospital staff responded immediately.

“… [they] cared for all patients who were receiving supplemental oxygen and ventilation and who were affected by the interruption. The treating doctors were notified by the hospital and arrived to provide assistance. During the process, all patients requiring resuscitation received the necessary care. Sadly, six patients died.

“The Lenmed Group has launched an urgent investigation into this matter, has notified all relevant authorities and is fully cooperating in this regard.

“Lenmed has also contacted the supplier of the oxygen equipment and infrastructure to determine the exact cause of the outage,” Naidoo added.

Lenmed CEO Amil Devchand sent his condolences to the affected families.

“We have made all of our resources available to support them during this painful period. I would like to assure all patients and their families that measures have been put in place in the meantime to prevent such an incident from happening again. “

The company claimed that it was maintaining all necessary staffing and support levels across all of its facilities that were responding to the current high demand for healthcare in light of Covid-19.

“It is the unfortunate reality that we are operating in unprecedented and extremely difficult times. The scale and impact of the second wave of Covid-19 infections are significant.

“I would like to thank our front-line staff for their continued dedication to the well-being and comfort of our patients. We will continue to provide them with the support they need to make their work bearable, ”said Devchand.
