Paramedics from the Ambulance Service donned personal protective equipment before evaluating a Covid-19 patient in Lenasia, Johannesburg.
The last week of 2020 was the deadliest recorded week of the year, according to the latest figures produced by the researchers, with 16,532 deaths recorded from all causes, of which more than 15,000 were from natural causes.
These deaths occurred as several provinces faced second waves, or resurgences, of Covid-19 cases and deaths, which have surpassed or are close to being worse than the initial increases in cases earlier in the year.
Research on mortality, conducted by the Burden of Disease Research Unit (BDRU) of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and members of the Actuarial Research Center (CARe) of the University of Cape Town, intensified to track the impact of the local Covid-19 epidemic.
