DURBAN: Navechnie Chunder, the daughter of the alleged Durban drug lord Yaganathan “Teddy Mafia” Pillay, has described her father as a “good and loving man”.
Chunder was speaking to Durban’s Lotus FM radio station, just hours after Pillay was murdered outside his home in Shallcross, Durban.
By characterizing his father as a modern Pablo Escobar, Chunder denied that his father was a drug lord. He told reporters that his father was never proven guilty.
“He was a good person. He was a caring person. He gave scholarships to schools. How about his children putting food in their mouths?” she said.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker confirmed that Pillay was the victim of a shooting on Taurus Street in Shallcross.
Naicker said Pillay told her daughter that she expected visitors.
“The daughter proceeded to the rear of the property where she heard gunshots. The daughter established that her father had been shot,” he said.
Pillay was rushed to the hospital where he died.
Meanwhile, two men believed to be related to Pillay’s murder were assaulted by the community. The couple was beheaded and their bodies burned.
Naicker said that when police officers arrived at the scene, the community opened fire on them.
“The police called the public order police unit which dispersed the crowd without injuries. The police did not seize firearms at the scene. The police are investigating three murder files,” he said.
Graphic videos showing the men’s bodies lying on the road, with their severed heads nearby, went viral on social media.
National police spokesman Brigadier Vish Naidoo urged residents to refrain from sharing the videos or photos.
“He is irresponsible and insensitive. This could also potentially negatively affect investigations, ”Naidoo said.
Police continued to patrol the streets of Shallcross today.
