JOHANNESBURG – A Johannesburg city councilor for the African National Congress (ANC), Kenneth Mgaga, who has been charged with rape, wrote to the party on Monday calling for it to step aside.
This after he was granted bail in Alexandra Magistrates Court early Monday.
It is claimed that he raped a woman on Boxing Day.
In the letter addressed to the party, Mgaga, although he claims to be innocent, requests a leave of absence from his function as councilor.
The region’s ANC has confirmed receiving Mgaga’s request.
His spokesperson, Sasa Manganye, said the letter came after the ANC decided to suspend him from the council.
“It only confirms the decision we have made to suspend it.”
Previously, Mangaye expressed disappointment at the party-clad members celebrating Mgaga receiving bail.
