Police watch two decapitated bodies burn in Shallcross.
- Suspicion of drug trafficker Yaganathan Pillay, Known as Teddy Mafia, he was shot and killed in Shallcross, south of Durban, on Monday afternoon.
- After the Mafia shooting, two unknown men were shot, beheaded and set on fire in the middle of a street in broad daylight.
- They are believed to be the men responsible for the death of Mafia.
A suspected Durban drug lord was shot dead, while two other unknown men were also shot, beheaded and their bodies burned in broad daylight.
Yaganathan Pillay, also known as Teddy Mafia, a suspected drug dealer, was shot twice in the head in Shallcross, south of Durban, on Monday afternoon.
Metro police spokesman Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad confirmed the shooting to News24, adding that Pillay was rushed to hospital in a private vehicle and died from the injuries he sustained.
Shortly after the shooting, two unknown men were also shot before their bodies were dragged to Taurus Street, Shallcross, where they were both beheaded and their bodies burned.
News24 has seen videos in which an unknown man grabs an ax from another man and begins to attack one of the dead.
Shortly after separating one of the heads, hitting it with the ax, another man fires a shot, driving the onlookers away.
One image shows the two beheaded men lying in the street, while another video shows a man putting tires on their bodies that have already been set.
Cordoned off
Sewpersad said police had been called to the scene around 3:00 pm, but have not yet been able to access the scene because the situation remained unstable. He said that while the scene was cordoned off, police have not been able to enter the area because community members have been stoning policemen who get too close.
At 5:00 p.m. on Monday, the scene was still active.
Police spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker said that at approximately 2:00 p.m., the mob had informed his daughter that they expected visitors.
“Upon the suspects’ arrival at her home, the daughter went to the back of her property when she heard gunshots. The daughter later established that her father had been shot.
“The community detained both suspects and then set them on fire, decapitating them,” Naicker said.
“When the police arrived at the scene, the community opened fire on them. The police called the Public Order Surveillance Unit, which dispersed the crowd without injuries.”
Naicker said police will investigate three murder cases.
News24 previously reported that Pillay is a suspected drug dealer and that he had previously been arrested, along with his son, for allegedly being in possession of drugs.
Police were reported to have raided his home in Shallcross where police allegedly seized heroin, cocaine, ecstasy and Mandrax with an estimated street value of R5m.
