Angry members of a community in northern KwaZulu-Natal allegedly beat six men, one to death, and set two vehicles on fire after a robbery at an elementary school in Jozini on Sunday night.
Police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala said the incident took place around midnight after members of the KwaJobe community saw two vehicles parked near the local elementary school.
“The community mobilized and managed to arrest six suspects between 24 and 43 years old.” Gwala said the men were attacked by the community and one, 35, died at the scene.
“The other five suspects were turned over to the police with assault wounds. One of the suspects was found with a licensed firearm.
“The community set fire to the two vehicles that were used by the suspects. It was later established that the elementary school in KwaJobe had been raided. The school’s fence was cut and the gates damaged.
“Murder charges, attempted murder, maliceMaterial damage and theft were opened at Jozini SAPS.
“The police received information about another vehicle with unknown occupants that had fled to Mbazwana. The Mbazwana police intercepted the vehicle with five occupants ”.
Gwala said five computers, two flat-screen TVs and burglary supplies were seized.
“Suspects between the ages of 21 and 32 were arrested for theft and possession of burglary tools. The investigation revealed that the computers were stolen from a school in Mbazwana. The suspects are alleged to have cut the fence. Police seized the vehicle for further investigation. “
The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula, praised the community for its fight against crime, but warned that people do not take justice into their own hands.
“While we appreciate the proactive action of the community, I also appeal to citizens not to break the law by assaulting suspects and destroying property that is required as evidence,” he said.
