Durban – The KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner said that while a proactive approach by communities in fighting crime was appreciated, he appealed to citizens not to break the law by assaulting suspects or destroying evidence.
This follows an incident in which a suspect was killed and two vehicles caught fire in Jozini on Sunday.
According to police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala, members of the KwaJobe community in Jozini saw two suspicious vehicles parked near the local primary school just before midnight.
“The community mobilized and managed to arrest a total of six suspects between 24 and 43 years old.
“The suspects were attacked by members of the community and one of the suspects, 35, died at the scene.
“The other five suspects were turned over to the police with assault wounds.”
Gwala said one of the suspects was found with a licensed firearm.
“The community set fire to the two vehicles that were used by the suspects.”
Gwala said that further investigation revealed that they raided an elementary school in KwaJobe.
“The fence around the school was cut down and the gates were also damaged.”
Charges of murder, attempted murder, intentional damage to property and theft were brought at Jozini SAPS.
According to Gwala, five suspects fled in a third vehicle in the direction of Mbazwana.
“The Mbazwana police intercepted the vehicle with five occupants.
“A total of five computers, two flat-screen televisions, and burglary supplies were found.”
The aged suspects, who were between 21 and 32 years old, were arrested.
“The investigation revealed that the computers were stolen from a school in Mbazwana. The suspects are alleged to have cut the fence. “
