The National Teachers Union (NATU) has announced that its president Allen Thompson has died.

In a statement on Facebook, NATU said: “We would like to formally inform you that our president, Mr. SA Thompson, has passed away. More details will be provided to him in due course. May his soul rest in peace.”

Basic Education Department spokesman Elijah Mhlanga also confirmed the news. He said he was shocked by Thompson’s death.

NATU secretary Cynthia Barnes said they would give an update after consulting with Thompson’s family later that day.

In 2018, Thompson survived an assassination attempt on his life when he was attacked by heavily armed men while traveling from Empangeni to Durban.

At the time of the attack, NATU had been calling for the KwaZulu-Natal education department to be administered. Thompson was shot through the driver’s front window and hit him in the shoulder.

He managed to drive himself to uMhlanga hospital while still being pursued by his attackers.

The attackers followed him to the hospital and, failing to find him, stole documents, money and two laptops from his car.
