Cricket South Africa (CSA) Today it was confirmed that the One Day Cup will begin on Saturday 9 January, with a revised number of 15 matches to be held in a Biosecure Environment (BSE) at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom.
The competition for those over 50 has been moved to a stadium and will be played behind closed doors to minimize the risk of transmission of Covid-19.
The six franchises in competition remain divided into two groups of three teams each. The defending champion Dolphins share Group A with the Titans and Knights and are scheduled to meet each other at home and away from their group between January 9-16.
The Lions, Cobras and Warriors make up Group B and are set to begin their campaign from January 29 to February 5.
Teams were originally expected to play a single round of crossover group matches, but instead the top two teams from each group will meet in the semifinals on Thursday, February 11 and Friday, February 12, with Senwes Park hosting the end on Sunday, February 14.
CSA Director of Cricket Graeme Smith said: “It’s great to be able to reaffirm that the Momentum One-Day Cup will take place this summer. This is the first limited-duration competition of the season and the respective franchises are eager to get started after a couple of weeks without competitive action.
“It is unfortunate that we have to reduce the number of games played and move the entire competition to one location, but restrictions must be in place to ensure the tournament takes place in a safe environment in accordance with government regulations.”
Group A will enter the BSE on Monday night in preparation for the opening game between the Titans and the Dolphins on Saturday, starting at 10:00 am.
“Cricket South Africa is also pleased to confirm that all 15 games will be televised live on SuperSport. Since our national and international tournaments are currently played behind closed doors, there is a huge appetite for live cricket.
“Televising each game will give fans unprecedented access to national cricket and showcase local talent in the absence of the games,” Smith concluded.
CSA has also introduced the new ICC playing condition where tied matches will be determined based on the following excerpt:
If the Super Over is a tie, subsequent Super Over will be played limited to a minimum of one (1) and a maximum three (3) to determine the winner. If all three Super Overs are tied, the match will be declared tied and match points will only be shared.
