Complacency in following the guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19 has seen a daily increase in new cases, with 217 cases and six deaths reported yesterday.

This caused the seven-day moving average for new cases to rise to 172 from 154 the day before.

Of the 217 reported cases, 216 were community-transmitted, an indication that people are completely ignoring the use of face masks and social distancing.

One case was that of a returnee from South Africa.

The six deaths were reported by Masvingo, Harare, Manicaland, Mashonaland Central (all one each), and Bulawayo (2).

An update released last night by the Ministry of Health and Child Care indicates that 3679 PCR tests were performed yesterday.

Yesterday 97 new recoveries were reported, leaving the national recovery rate at 80.6 percent.

Active cases skyrocketed to 2,368 like yesterday.

Harare has the most Covid-19 cases with 549 cases and Bulawayo 348.

Other provinces have similarly higher numbers and Matabeleland North has the fewest cases at 72.

As of January 1 of this year, Zimbabwe had registered 14,084 cases, 11,347 recoveries and 369 deaths.
