South Africa’s major highways saw traffic surge on Saturday as drivers returned from their holiday destinations.
Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesman Simon Zwane said at least 1,600 vehicles per hour were logged heading to Gauteng on the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal.
“The number of vehicles leaving vacation spots on the coast has increased considerably.
“Large numbers of vehicles are also expected on the N1 from Limpopo, the N4 from Mpumalanga and the N2 from the northwest. Drivers intending to return from their vacation spots are urged to plan their trips and avoid driving. at night to avoid crashes, “Zwane added in a statement.

With the adjusted Level 3 lockdown rules still in effect, law enforcement operations continued across the country.
Zwane said that so far 1,500 motorists have been arrested for drinking alcohol while 4,700 unfit for road vehicles have been impounded.
He urged motorists to avoid driving during curfew, which begins at 9:00 p.m. and ends at 6:00 a.m. every day.
