  • All computers from Sapphire High School in Vanderbijlpark were stolen.
  • The thieves apparently managed to enter the computer lab through a wall.
  • The computers were donated to the school in September.

In the last hours of 2020 all computers were stolen from Sapphire High School in Vanderbijlpark.

The school received a donation from MTN and Huawei for a computer lab in September.

From photos of the scene, it appears that the thieves gained access to the computer lab by drilling a hole in the wall below a window.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, tweeted about the theft on Friday. His spokesman, Steve Mabona, confirmed the theft to News24 and said that all the computers were stolen and that these were the computers that were donated in September.

Mabona said 42 computers were stolen and that the theft occurred before midnight.

When South Africa entered its first lockdown in March last year, there were a series of robberies at schools.

Between March 18 and April 30, 962 schools across the country were raided, vandalized and, in some cases, even set on fire.
