CAPE TOWN – As the second wave of COVID-19 infections intensifies and provinces prepare for the worst, the focus is on healthcare workers on Friday.
President Cyril Ramaphosa paid tribute to the nation’s healthcare personnel during a special ceremony in Khayelitsha on Thursday night.
It was a gesture of thanks from President Ramaphosa in late 2020, which he described as a year from hell.
Ramaphosa acknowledged that the government had failed healthcare workers at times from delays in providing adequate PPE to insufficient recognition for those who saved lives and risked exposure.
The ceremony took place the same night that South Africa recorded another record for new infections, with 18,000 recorded in 24 hours.
“We are in a dark valley of coronavirus destruction.”
But Ramaphosa said doctors, nurses and other staff working around the clock represent the nation’s best hope.
“You have the Florence Nightingale candle and have always lit the way forward.”
Ramaphosa promised that the government will do better to protect healthcare workers and honored the 436 employees who have died from COVID-19.
