The Free State police arrested 42 people who were trying to enter the country illegally by crossing the Caledon River using a tube.

According to police spokesman Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, the Bethlehem Public Order Police (POP) Task Force was deployed Thursday to the Ficksburg Port of Entry for “Safest Holiday Season” operations and to ensure full compliance and compliance with tight level 3 lockout regulations.

While patrolling the border and ports of entry near the Caledon River, they noticed a group of people crossing the border from Lesotho illegally via the river, using a tube.

“The members kept watch and waited for them to cross [sic] South African shores and arrested them. The 42 people were arrested as illegal immigrants entering the Republic of South Africa at a location other than the port of entry, “the statement read.

The suspects will appear soon in Ficksburg Magistrates Court.
