DURBAN – Several areas around Durban have been hit by infrastructure damage problems following last night’s massive storm.
According to the municipality of eThekwini, some critical water infrastructure was also damaged in the process. Parts of the critical infrastructure that was damaged included the high-rise pump station at the Inanda Dam operated by Umgeni Water.
Damage to this pump station resulted in a raw water volume deficit of 100 ml / day to the Durban Heights treatment plants. This caused storage at the Durban Heights treatment plants to run empty at midnight on New Year’s Eve.
As a result, most of the reservoirs supplied by this plant are critically low, with the Northdene, Chatsworth, Shallcross, Umlazi, Washington Heights and Intake Road reservoirs being the most affected.
Ultimately, the following areas may not experience water, intermittent supply, or low pressure as the water from Umgeni and the EWS attempt to recover the system.
● Northdene
● Chatsworth
● Queensburgh
● Shallcross
● Burlington Heights
● Increasing
● Umlazi
● Demat
● Welbedatch
● Umlazi, sections CC, F, G, H, W
● Folweni
● Freezing
● Iron
● Nagina
● Luganda
Due to network communication failures resulting in storms, other reservoirs could also be affected, so levels are being checked manually on site.
The Durban Heights are estimated to reach minimum operating level later this afternoon on January 1, 2021 to allow EWS to efficiently fill all affected reservoirs. EThekwini Water Services anticipates having all reservoirs fully recovered by tomorrow.
