From April 17 to June 19 of next year Sharks, Bulls, Lions and Stormers will participate in a competition called the Rainbow Cup that will see them face off against the European teams currently playing in PRO14.

It is the first step in South African rugby’s permanent movement towards European competition and away from Super Rugby.

According to the Rugby Paper, the Saracens are looking to host the four South African franchises before the tournament begins as part of their own preparation for the start of the English season.

It would also be a valuable preparation for Saracen players who could be considered for next year’s British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa.

The final of the Currie Cup, meanwhile, will take place on January 23.
