The first day of 2021 brings inclement weather for KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, the Free State and the Northwest, according to the South African Meteorological Service.

Impact-based warnings

– Yellow warning (Level 2) for disruptive rain that could cause flooding of susceptible informal settlements, low roads and bridges and can also result in difficult driving conditions. Slippery roads and poor visibility can be expected in most of KwaZulu-Natal, the central and eastern parts of the Northwest, and the Free State, extending to parts of the Lowveld of Limpopo at night.

– Yellow warning (Level 2) for wind (southeast), with possible localized damage to properties, problems for high-sided vehicles, as well as temporary closures of main routes (N2-Sir Lowry’s Pass and N1-Huguenot Tunnel) until Saturday by night over Cape Metropole, the southwestern Cape Winelands and the western Overberg districts of the Western Cape.

Fire hazard warnings

Extremely high fire hazard conditions are expected in the Cape Metropole, West Coast District and Stellenbosch Municipality of the Western Cape, as well as in the Khai-Mai and Kamiesberg municipalities of the Northern Cape.

The eastern half of the Eastern Cape will be cloudy and cool with scattered showers and showers, but isolated in the west.

The wind along the coast will be cool to strong from the southwest, becoming moderate to the south at night.

KwaZulu-Natal You can expect morning fog over the interior and partly cloudy and warm in the north at first, otherwise cloudy and cool but cold in the southwestern parts.
