Driver’s license testing centers should only be for new applicants, Wheels24 readers say.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has announced another extension for driving and learning licenses, and this time for vehicle licenses as well.
Mbalula previously announced at Cape Town International Airport on Thursday (December 31), and posted in his social media account: “In order to relieve the pressure on motorists and give the authorities sufficient time to clear the delays as a result of the above restrictions, we have extended the validity of learning and driving licenses, vehicle licenses, professional driving licenses, operating licenses, accreditation certificates for tourist services “.
All those that have expired between March 26, 2020 until December 31, 2020, and until February 28, 2021 with regard to operating licenses, until August 31, 2021 inclusive, will be considered valid.
While this is temporary good news, it’s all a big mess because what happens to all the drivers who have been charged exorbitant fines and paid for their expired vehicle licenses in the meantime?
The extension for driver’s and learner’s licenses should have included vehicle licenses from the beginning.
South Africa will need more than two months to recover from the pandemic, provided citizens adhere to strict protocols. February is coming in the blink of an eye and we will still be sitting with the same problem. Motorists will wait until February and the backlog would not have eased. A much longer stretch is needed, at least until we are safely out of the forest.

We expect an increase in traffic movement on the roads after the president’s speech. Our road operations will continue and will be more focused on the roads used to travel back to where people live and work. #livebeyonddezemba pic.twitter.com/eJqlEAuNSS

Considering that many people will travel long distances to return to their workplaces during the first weeks of January, we have put on the table a proposal to allow long-distance buses and taxis to complete their journeys … https: / / t.co/u7ZHDALP8s pic.twitter.com/zHHTC2NR7J
