CAPE TOWN – After months with no local cases in the nation’s largest city, Sydney is battling a new outbreak and officials reported 147 cases Wednesday.
The reintroduction of restrictions in the city came a week before Christmas, which included border closures outside of New South Wales (NSW), airline cancellations and a limitation on holiday gatherings.
However, this did not stop the young residents who flocked to Bronte Beach in Sydney on Christmas Day, with numerous videos and images going viral on social media.

“The events of the past few days… are incredibly frustrating and disappointing for people across the country who had plans to meet and move between states. 2020 is not done with us yet, “said Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
The New South Wales state government announced new restrictions for New Year’s Eve following a new group, believed to have emerged during the Christmas festivities.
Households will now be restricted to five guests, instead of 10, and outdoor gatherings are reduced from 50 to 30 people.
Meanwhile, Sydney’s traditional New Year’s Eve fireworks display will continue with authorities banning gatherings around the harbor.

“In a pandemic, there is a level of volatility, so we will monitor what happens closely,” said New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian.
“We don’t want New Year’s Eve to be the cause of a super spreader,” he said.
