Durban – Police Minister Bheki Cele has come under fire for sending the country to bed at 9pm before New Year’s Eve celebrations at night.

Cele, who was speaking to police officers in KwaMashu on Wednesday, warned South Africans to stay home and in bed at 9 p.m. in a dramatic speech.

“This time there are no December 31, December 31 people cans of shaya loves (light fireworks), there is no tin shot here (there are no fireworks here. At 9 pm, everyone must be sleeping, everyone is in bed, ”he said.

South Africans are known to have excessive New Years celebrations that usually involve large crowds at parties, music festivals, and the setting up of fireworks.

But this year, the celebrations are expected to be muted, after President Cyril Ramaphosa instituted a ban on the sale of alcohol until January 15.

The EFF, in condemning Cele, said the ministers’ comments were inappropriate and attracted attention.

“After President Ramaphosa announced that we must celebrate the new year in our homes and that at 12 midnight he will light a candle for the deceased due to Covid-19, Bheki Cele arrives and contradicts the president with his baseless and stupid regulations. that South Africans should be in bed by 9pm.

“We are all expected to be home by 9 pm, so the police should not harass South Africans for the wrong asshole of a minister who clearly suffers from verbal diarrhea,” said EFF spokesman Vuyani Pambo.

The EFF said Cele was violent and anti-black, saying he also did not have the same enthusiasm for issues related to gender-based violence, cash-in-transit robberies and corruption.

“We are not in a police state and Bheki Cele must not behave as if he is the absolute referee. He can tell his children to go to sleep at 9 pm, not us, ”said Pambo.

Later on Thursday, images emerged of police forcing motorists to unpack their luggage, allegedly in search of alcohol. In other videos, police were seen catching motorists who had alcohol stored in their car boots with an angry Cele ordering immediate arrests of those caught.
