Power company Eskom has suspended load shedding as electricity demand falls ahead of the long weekend.

However, SA’s electricity system remains “vulnerable and unstable,” and almost half of the country’s generation capacity is unavailable.

Earlier in the week, Eskom began implementing overnight power outages in an attempt to shore up reserves before the start of the new year, when economic activity is expected to pick up.

It said Thursday it would take advantage of the slowdown period to replenish its emergency diesel and water generation reserves.

“During this period, Eskom will also continue to seek further reliability maintenance as planned and previously communicated. While this will put pressure on the generation plant, maintenance is necessary to improve the reliability and performance of the plants.”
