Covid-19 cases continue to increase in Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe postponed the planned reopening of schools for next week, the government said on Wednesday, due to an increase in Covid-19 infections and a tropical storm hitting the region.
The government had set January 4 as the date to reopen primary and secondary schools, after many students missed classes for much of last year as the country tried to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Zimbabwe has recorded more than 13,000 Covid-19 cases and 359 deaths. Daily cases have averaged more than 100 this week, compared to less than 50 last month.
A teachers union previously petitioned the courts to halt the reopening of schools, saying it was unsafe for students to return to class.
Tumisang Thabela, secretary of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, said that rising infections and the threat of tropical storm Chalane, which was expected to hit Zimbabwe from Mozambique, had forced the new mandate to be postponed. A new date will be communicated.
Since March, students have only had a few weeks of school, if any, as schools offered a staggered reopening beginning in September, with students studying for public exams a priority.
