Government spokesman Nick Mangwana tweeted: “Evacuation is ongoing in Chimanimani as the government prioritizes the safety of residents in the event that Chalane hits the area with devastating effect.”

Chimanimani Member of Parliament Joshua Sacco said the Health Ministry had provided medicine to the clinics and teams were on standby to rescue people stranded on the roads. He advised people to avoid traveling to areas where the storm was expected to hit hard.

Schools and churches have been offered in danger zones as shelters for evacuees. The government said it has used $ 30 million (R439.8 million) for disaster response.

Mutare, the country’s fourth-largest city, also went on high alert.

“People in the lower areas of Mutare, such as Zimta and Bernwin, and those living in temporary accommodation such as Federation and Kimboki, are advised to seek alternative accommodation before a disaster strikes,” a statement from the municipality reads. .

The meteorological services department (MSD) said Monday that the incoming storm could be as powerful as Cyclone Dineo of 2007.

Dineo destroyed some 20,000 homes in Mozambique and Zimbabwe, displacing at least 130,000 people. It caused widespread flooding in Zimbabwe’s Mutare, Chiredzi and Beitbridge, flooding in Botswana, and a cholera outbreak affecting Malawi and Mozambique.

Malawi’s department for disaster management affairs said the country was prepared to respond to the storm.
