Police are on the hunt for 15 people suspected of being involved in a cash-in-transit robbery in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Preliminary police investigations indicate a Mercedes-Benz SUV collided with a G4S pickup truck carrying cash Tuesday morning along Paul Kruger Street in Wonderboom, police say.

“Three G4S security officers were ejected from the vehicle, unarmed and their service pistols taken. The suspects then attacked the van with explosives that they set off, along with the Mercedes van,” said national police spokeswoman, Colonel Athlenda Mathe.

When other security officers arrived at the scene, there was a shout between them and the group.

“The suspects then fled the scene in several vehicles. While examining the scene, the police discovered a gray BMW that was found abandoned on a nearby property,” Mathe said.

“The vehicle is believed to have been used as an escape vehicle. The vehicle was found to have been stolen during a hijacking incident that took place in Lyttelton earlier this year,” he added.

Police investigations are ongoing to determine if money was taken.
