JOHANNESBURG – Surpassing 1 million COVID-19 cases – and non-compliance sent South Africa back to Blockade Level 3.

On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the increase in cases during the holiday season forced the government.

The ministers of the National Coronavirus Command Council have explained what some of these measures mean for South Africans.

First on the list to try to contain the spread, it is an extension of the curfew from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Within the curfew, restaurants can operate at 50% capacity and with 1.5 meters between people.

Lodging places will remain open, but many attractions have been marked with red tape.

“Beaches are closed in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KZN. They are closed to everything except fishermen. The Northern Cape is the only place where people can go to the beach,” said the Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

The closure also extends to any gatherings such as parties and events, but places of worship will remain open while observing 50% capacity and social distancing.

The regulation will be in effect until January 15 and South Africans will have to accept it.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says a vaccine is expected in 2021 and that frontline workers will be prioritized when distribution begins.

He says that until everyone can get vaccinated, the way to fight COVID-19 is to follow regulations.
