Jacob Zuma used various tactics to avoid capture of the testimony by the state, listens ConCourt

Ngcukaitobi said that a large part of that was attributable to the Covid-19 shutdown, and said there was no deafening silence from the investigation.

He said notices were sent under the investigation regulations requiring Zuma to answer specific allegations. The “adversarial process” on the subpoena was done to be fair to Zuma, he said.

He said the events showed a “painstaking effort by the vice president of the Supreme Court to accommodate a former president,” but Zuma’s response was one of “belligerence, defiance and ultimately contempt.”

Ngcukaitobi argued that if the investigation had gone to the higher court, rather than directly to ConCourt, a route only allowed in the most exceptional circumstances, it would have defeated the whole purpose as the investigation is limited in duration.

The investigation is due to deliver its report by the end of March, and although Zondo has indicated that it will request an extension until the end of June, it is not known whether it will be granted, Ngcukaitobi said.
