In an attempt to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Monday night a series of stricter restrictions to be imposed.

The sale of alcohol at the points of sale or the consumption of alcohol on site will not be allowed.

SALBA’s Sibani Mngadi said the industry was concerned about the illegal sale of alcohol.

“There will be a rapid increase in illegal sales, whether they are legitimate or counterfeit products, as consumer demand will remain constant and it is certainly an area that we have been struggling to deal with from both government and industry,” he said Mngadi.

In his message, Ramaphosa reiterated the danger and problems South Africa faces in imploring citizens to act responsibly in the fight against COVID-19.

The president also took the opportunity to again denounce the super spreader events and their contribution to the increasing cases.

“This is cause for great alarm and points to an extreme lack of vigilance during the holiday period. We have let our guard down and sadly now we are paying the price, ”Ramaphosa said.

By setting strict measures, Ramaphosa not only put the country back at level 3, but also declared that it would now be illegal not to wear a mask when in public.

“A person who does not wear a mask could be arrested and prosecuted. When found guilty, they will be punished with a fine or with a prison sentence for a period not exceeding six months or with a fine and a prison sentence ”, he said.

The Level 3 regulations are expected to last until at least January 15, after which they will be reviewed.
