Rejoice Mabudafhasi, 77, who served as deputy minister in at least two portfolios, will replace Mphakama Mbete as SA’s ambassador to Zimbabwe starting in January next year, diplomatic sources told SowetanLIVE’s sister publication TimesLIVE.

The former national treasurer of the National Union of Education, Health and Allied Workers (Nehawu), an affiliate of Cosatu, is expected to seek to strengthen commercial and economic relations between Harare and Pretoria.

Lunga Nqengelele, media liaison officer with the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, said however that the department will only comment if he presents his credentials in Harare.

“We do not usually comment on appointed ambassadors before they are accepted by the host country. It is an international practice because a host country has the right to refuse. We will only speak after a designee, in this case to Zimbabwe, meets with the president of that country to present their credentials and is accepted, ”he said.
