The search continues for a teenager who disappeared in the waves at Ouskip in Melkbosstrand on Sunday, the city of Cape Town said Monday.

Police divers continue to search for the teenager believed to have drowned Sunday while swimming with family members.

“Our thoughts are with the family during this very difficult time and we hope that the search efforts can provide them with a sense of closure,” said Zahid Badroodien of the city.

“This has been a very quiet holiday season so far compared to what we are used to, but our staff remains ready to help the public in any way possible.”

News24 previously reported that the National Maritime Rescue Institute’s crew was activated Sunday following reports from law enforcement officers on the scene.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, first responders rescued a 37-year-old man from the Camps Bay tidal pool after he fell into the water.

According to the City Council, there are indications that alcohol was involved.

“We cannot emphasize enough the importance of responsible behavior when we are away from home, particularly around our bodies of water. Our staff can only do so much, but we need the help of the public to ensure that a day ends well for all involved.

Badroodien urged all bathers not to drink alcohol in swimming pools and other recreational facilities.

“It is the biggest source of trauma and reckless behavior, and given the pressure on our healthcare system right now, something we cannot afford,” he said.

Additionally, the City has conducted daily supervisory visits to the City’s beaches.

The City said feedback from the Christmas long weekend was that the majority of bathers adhered to social distancing, although wearing masks remained a problem. ”
